The Croft

Long horn cattle

The Croft is a small holding of 42.5 hectares, 16 of which are in the village of Houghton just north of Carlisle the remainder at Armathwaite beside the river Eden.

Pedigree Longhorn cattle raised at The Croft live out all year, in the winter being fed on hay made at The Croft. Geese are raised for the Christmas market.

Longhorn cattle are a traditional Cumbrian breed. A small flock of mule ewes is kept and the cross bred Suffolk lambs are sold direct, like the beef, the lamb is delicious. Organic, free-range Geese are finished for the Christmas market. The goslings have arrived and orders are already being taken!

The Croft is open for educational visits to groups of all ages. We offer farm walks and a range of activities which we can tailor to suit the needs of your group, from cooking to felt making. Students wanting work experience prior to studying veterinary science or agricultural related subjects are welcomed.
